Full Description

In the vast vaults that were underneath the Friary much treasure was deposited for security the civil wars. The monastic seal, a Madonna and child, was found some years ago when Lord Middleton occupied the place several skeletons were discovered underneath the hall floor. (1)
Excavations in advance of construction work, 1978 uncovered the inhumations of a child c 6 years old and an adult male found to W (6 others found previously during shoring work). (2)
Chance find in 1984 in Friary courtyard - incomplete skeleton of male adult, aged 20-30 years. (3)
Excavations prior to housing development east of the friary site uncovered an extensive cemetery. The circumstances under which the material was retrieved were far from perfect. All the bones were excavated from the foundation trenches resulting in very few complete skeletons. In total it has been suggested that 136 individual inhumation burials were found. (4)
