Full Description

In Appleton Gate, adjoining the Grammar School, and about a hundred yards from the Church, is a large house…which bears the name of the Chantry House because it stands upon the site of a residence which was erected…for the use of chantry priests. Mr. Samuel Foster, of Woodbrough reconstructed the Chantry House “in a sort of Palladian style suggested by his friend and intimate associate, Sir John Vanbrugh” and the armorial bearings of the family used to adorn the principal front. Rimmer (Ancient Streets and Homesteads, p 227) describes it as “a fine specimen of Queen Anne’s reign highly enriched”. (1)
In 1921 the Chantry House was demolished and the Palace Cinema built on the site. 2 undated (? C19) etchings show it as a large C18 building with extensive grounds, and it was not structurally altered until demolition. (2)
Fragments moved to garden of 114 Hawton Road from a stone ruin on the site demolished prior to construction of cinema. Chance find behind cinema - winged cupid tile. Carved oak removed prior to demolition, 1919. (3)
See M3639 for medieval Chantry college, M3940 for school, see L10509 for church brass.
