Full Description
The first record of the construction of a Chantry Priests' house on this spot was in 1415. The only picture to survive dates from 1787 and shows a cloistered brick building of mid C17 which must have replaced the original building. This later building was demolished and replaced in 1819 by the extant Old Grammar School Building. From the aforementioned picture of the Chantry Priests' house and a plan of the same by Richard Ingleman (1819), there is a possibility that some of the stone foundations of the house have survived and are now visible at the base of the Old Grammar School building. (1)
In 1415 an area to the NW of the Minster including a portion of the graveyard had been given over for the construction of a house for the Minster's chantry priests. … Although situated in what would appear to be the Chantry Priests' house garden, (the lias and limestone foundations) may be part of an E wing of the house demolished in C16 to make way for the garden. The red sandstone wall may represent a stone refacing of the street frontage of the building or a large boundary wall for the grounds of the house during C16 - C18, as indicated on the plan from 1819.
