Full Description
The pit for the drains lay in the N corner of the site. The SE side was straightened and cleaned to provide a section. A layer of angular limestone lumps, c.10cm across, in a matrix of pale silty sand (0006). Beneath this was a layer of charcoal (0007), c.2cm thick. Beneath this was 0008, a layer of sand burnt terra-cotta red and dark brown lying within an arc mainly beneath the section. 0002 produced a sherd of medieval pot, and despite cleaning, 0002 - 0008 failed to produce any post medieval pottery. The arc of burnt material may be a lime kiln: several late medieval or early post medieval examples were found at Slaughter House Lane, consisting of a conical pit with heavily burnt sides, appearing on the surface as a ring of burnt material, approximately 2m diameter, around the unburnt later infill in the centre.
