Full Description

A mesolithic focus [is present] along the western margin of the gravel island (and neolithic / bronze age activity over the remainder). Within the latter area are suggestions of at least one and possibly two clusters of earlier date (Earlier neolithic / mesolithic). The apparent concentration of mesolithic flintwork at the edge of the gravel island is of particular interest, [there is] the possibility of well preserved mesolithic remains beneath alluvium. (1)
Indicators of Mesolithic activity were consistently found in the W line of test pits, with the best evidence further to the W from the topsoil and residual flint in the features of trenches 02 and 03 … these flints, therefore, are probably an undisturbed remnant of the original pattern of flintwork deposition, only part of which has been incorporated into ploughsoil deposits. See M18292 for BA focus.
