Fish ponds. (1)
In 1649 Edward Cludd had a map prepared … clearly marked are two ponds which are still extant near the SE boundary of the deer park. These were … likely to have been a feature of the original emparkment (which took place by 1388). The ponds have the typical rectangular form, the one to the N being somewhat larger than the other. The larger pond was drained into the ditch surrounding the deer park; the outlet pipe connecting it to the ditch is visible and is described in the 2nd edition OS map, 1900, as a 'sluice'. … in 1881 Norwood was bought … the map which was prepared for the sale (shows) the two original ponds have a plantation surrounding them, indicating they were virtually unused by this date.
