Full Description

Earthwork running along part of the boundary between East Leake and Rempstone. Its form is variable but it appears to be the result of ploughing; ie lynchets implying some form of physical boundary at the edge of a ploughed field . The ridge identified as a possible headland running parallel to and N of part of the boundary is probably a feature of Medieval ploughing. The boundary can be demonstrated to be in its present position from at least 1798 though the position of the medieval headland suggests it is of much greater antiquity. Excavation identified a ditch containing some pottery sherds, including some substantial fragments from near the base of the ditch fill, dated to C19. Given the date of the Enclosure Award (1798) it may be suggested that the ditch was the boundary marker dug at Enclosure. (1)
