Full Description

A large pit feature cut into the natural. Truncated by modern C19 deposits on its S side and showing visible signs of burning around the undisturbed N side. The pit contained three fills, the upper fill contained a regionally important amount of mid C17 pottery, probably represents a refuse layer laid down after the industrial process for which the pit had been dug had been completed. The primary fill was a loose fill of charcoal and ash. This feature is most likely to be a pit excavated for the specific purpose of smelting soft metals such as lead, silver or copper alloys. (1)
