Full Description

This earlier wall (125) stood two courses high, cut into the natural and constructed of large, high quality dressed limestone blocks, bonded with a high inclusion lime mortar. A layer of demolition material (109) contained fragments of stone roofing tile, ceramic floor tiles and medieval pottery. This layer appears to respect the lower wall fragment and it is therefore reasonable to assume that the two are related, with (109) being demolition material related to the building of which (125) once formed a part. The section of wall represents an earlier phase of building, probably the rear of medieval structure facing Castlegate, which was utilised as a solid foundation for a later development. Sealed by demolition layer (109) was a spread of unbonded rough limestone fragments. Wall (125) butts it at its N end. Most likely to be the remains of a dry stone wall which has either fallen or been pushed down. … Based on the width of those structures exposed, it is likely that they supported a timber framed rather than a stone superstructure.
