Full Description

A section of wall, aligned E-W and constructed of bonded rough cut limestone fragments. Several fragments of C18 - C19 pottery were recovered from the area. This wall was found to be built on and adjacent to an earlier phase of walling. Running parallel a second wall fragment was discovered. This was constructed from two courses of bonded rough cut limestone fragments, capped with two courses of thin handmade C18 red bricks, suggesting that the rough limestone fragments were acting as foundation material for the main brick built structure. The wall / foundation fragments most likely form part of the post medieval cottage which stood on this site until they [sic] were demolished in the late 1960s. Butted by the two related wall foundations was a compacted clay layer containing occasional flecks of charcoal and C17 - C18 pottery. This layer probably represents the original floor or underfloor layer of the recently demolished cottages. (1)
See M18299 for medieval building on this site, foundations partially reused for this building and mentioned above as 'earlier phase of walling', M18298 for P med industrial pit, M18301 for med town drain
