Full Description
The evidence of pits and yard surfaces confirms that these were the rear of the burgage plots with frontages on Stodman Street. The rubble walls are not in alignment but very similar in character. Whether they represent the remains of buildings or property boundaries was not clear although the apparent lack of floor layers would indicate the latter. The scant pottery evidence would suggest that one at least is pre C14. The large ditch would seem to be the boundary shown on C18 and C19 maps and yet is of unusual width and depth for such a feature. The burgage plots from Castlegate and Lombard Street meet in this vicinity and it is possible that this ditch has some connection with the original laying out of this part of the town. (1)
