Full Description
At the E end of (Church) lane the base of the churchyard wall is 1.5m higher than the present road surface; even allowing for the accumulation of soil this difference is considerable and emphasises the hollow-lane nature of the roads N of the village junction. It is possible that boulder clay was deliberately scraped from the road surfaces in the medieval period (and until roads were metalled) in order both to expose a solid surface and to use the clay / dung mixture on local fields. The present streets seem to have been reformed and metalled during the post-medieval period, incorporating brick waste into the substantial depth of material used to fill the deep hollows that appear to have formed. The present road network has probably been in use with almost no deviation for many centuries. The only exception to this was at the E end of Top Street where some re-alignment may have occurred. (1)
Grid reference at E end of Church Lane.
See M18309 for brickworks.
