Full Description

A brick foundation was exposed on the NE corner of The Green. It was about 1.2m wide and survived to a depth of 0.7m below the road surface. The bricks were red with no frog; they are thought to be C17 date. This is thought to represent part of a frontage wall for a demolished C17 or C18 dwelling. It demonstrates that the properties around the village green were approaced by a considerably narrower lane in the past. Chapman's plan of 1774 and the 1804 Enclosure plan of Dunham mark no buildings on The Green; the street plan and width is similar to the present arrangment on the latter. The demolition of those brick structures in the pipe trench therefore almost certainly predate that plan. (1)
