Full Description
Vestigal traces of a brick structure were seen to the S of Flears Farm immediately below the turf on the road side verge. The actual extent of the bricks was uncertain but was no greater than 25m N - S, parallel to the present lane. The surviving footings consisted of a single course of red bricks, unfrogged but mortared (unfortunately a broad possible date range, C17 - late C19). Interpretation is difficult within the narrow trench but it may have been a brick surface or floor rather than a wall foundation, and it is likely that it represented a small outbuilding rather than a house. There does not seem to be any cartographic evidence for houses on the E side of Upper Row in this vicinity. A small quantity of pottery sherds and roof tile fragments were recovered slightly to the N of this feature … large numbers of C18 - C20 wares were also present. (1)
