Full Description

Sutton Grange. (1)
Local opinion associated Sutton Grange Farm with Newstead Abbey … The W wall internal foundation was offset by as much as 25cm and it was thought that this probably indicated more than one build. Overlying the top of the trench and abutting the internal W wall face was a c. 20m [sic, probably means cm!] thick layer of dark brown charcoal flecked sandy silt ... with … a large sherd of medieval pottery, Midland Purple. … The original house was rectangular in plan with opposing doorways in the E and W walls. There may have been two phases in construction and the apparently blocked doorway in the W wall would seem to be a later addition. The stonework was sandstone, mortared with pink gypsum mortar and sand. The footings were unusually massive for a building of this type. The only dating evidence is the one sherd of Midland Purple ware which could suggest a late medieval date for the structure. (2)
Remembers seeing green glazed pottery on the site along with a possible pit during a site visit when the area was first cleared. Building demolished in the course of development but site protected and not built upon. (3)
Samples were obtained from two ceiling joists at this site in 1993 … the timbers represented here were felled very early in 1767. (4)
