Full Description

(The Friary) in extensive gardens enclosed by old stone walls. (1)
The present site is defined by a boundary wall, parts of which may be medieval, enclosing some 3.5 acres. (2)
Archaeological recording was carried out 10-13/02/1982 due to the building of a new access road. The N face of a section through the boundary wall and bank behind was recorded. The lower half of the wall was concluded to belong to the C16 Friary or the succeeding house. This was followed by the 1st phase of the Royalist bank ... which was cut into by a later phase of the wall. (3)
The boundary wall is formed in two distinct parts, the southerly is c 2m high and consists of a random mixture of ashlar and rubble stone blocks, a good deal has recently been rebuilt in Lias; many of the ashlar blocks have mason's marks. The northern stretch is c 1.3m high and is formed in roughly-coursed Lias limestone. This wall has been cut away roughly on the N side by the access road, beyond which it continues in the same character along the Friary Road frontage and beyond. (4)
Grif ref centred, on Friary Road.
See M18184 for Med Friary, M3637 for P Med house, M8494 for Civil War defences, M9599 for NW boundary wall.
