Full Description
A stub of lias limestone wall in front of H and S services in Guildhall Street may have been part of a medieval guildhall. (1)
There is mention of a Gild Lane in 1302 … in 1471 the Guild Hall is described as being in "the middle of Balderton Gate". The confirmation of the Guild Hall being present on the site comes from an article taken from the Methodist Messenger in 1871 which states that the land was acquired to build a new Methodist Chapel … the plot contained "the old Guildhall, six cottages and some adjoining land". For a time the old Guildhall was used by the Methodists but then "in due time the old building was demolished and a new chapel completed" (by Feb 1787). The piece of wall on the site … its substantial construction and the use of blue lias stone could mean that it was once part of an important building. We might consider it to be the potential remains of the Guildhall or at least part of its boundary wall. (2)
See M9630 for Methodist Chapel.
