Full Description
A N - S wall foundation (21) c.0.55m in width made from rough cut local stone blocks and rubble bonded with yellow sandy clay. The W face of (21) was butted by a mortar bonded foundation comprising rough cut stone blocks with brick inclusions on a different orientation. Both sets of foundations were beneath a thick layer of destruction rubble. There was a small stub of E-W foundation showing in the E section c.6m N of (21). It is suggested that the two foundations represent part of the same original building - possibly they were sills, designed to support timber framed walls. No pottery was found in association with the building but on stratigraphic evidence, a medieval date seems likely. It is likely that a small pit just to the W of (21) was associated with earlier occupation of the structure. The pit was roughly bowl shaped with a lens of burnt material in the top. After the demise of the structure, the site appears to have been levelled. (1)
