Full Description

Industrial features … the sides of the pit were heavily burnt. C. 1.5m N a similar but smaller burnt feature was examined … bowl shaped, the sides were heavily burnt black and red and on the N side a quantity of in situ slag was found adhering to the inner face. It is thought the material being smelted was lead. Two fills were identified, the lower comprised ashy soil with frequent burnt limestone fragments. The upper fill, pottery was probably C17. It would seem that there was something of a cluster of furnaces on this part of the site during part of C17. Although only one of these was examined in any detail, the morphology and pattern of burning was common to the group. (1)
