Full Description

A thick black sticky layer, dating from C14, based on the presence of Humber ware pottery types. This layer may represent remains of medieval mill waterworks. The fine nature of the silt suggests still or nearly still water such as would be found in a mill pond. Possible mill race features were noted in the stonework now forming part of the bridge. Alternatively, this layer may represent riverine deposits building up against the base of the bridge. In either case the artefacts appear to represent rubbish disposal. There is very little pottery from C15 - C17. This suggests that the site may have ceased to be a pond and become a waterlogged field by then. (1)
See M6076 for watermill, M17943 for bridge.
