Full Description
Map and fieldbook of 1812 describes the western-most building (on the Old Infants' School plot) as the property of William Dewick and used as a blacksmith's shop and croft. The Infant's School was built in 1870. The presence of metalworking debris suggests that the structural remains within trench 01 are those of the blacksmith's shop first documented in 1812 and demolished c.1870. Wall 0013 is probably the W wall of this structure, 0012 being an internal wall. The E wall lay beyond the area of excavation. The brick lined drain is an integral part of the structure so the building can be no older than the early C17. (1)
