Full Description

High status Anglo-Saxon burial, a woman aged 35 - 45 years who had been buried with beads, wrist clasps, a gilded circular mount, ivory purse ring, wooden bucket, Roman coins and a decorated urn, in a grave within an enclosure ditch. … The [post medieval] gully had been widened [to allow robbing of the contents, DJB] as it crossed the pit and the upper part of the skeleton was disarticulated with bones and burial goods scattered throughout the grave. (Within enclosure ditch of possibly Neo mortuary enclosure) … re-use of prehistoric burial sites in the Saxon period is well attested and it must remain a possibility here. However, the almost central location of the grave within the area defined by the enclosure ditch suggests the two may have been contemporaneous. There is no evidence a mound had been erected over the burial and its existence remains open to question. (1) (2)
The burial pit does not appear to be all that centrally located and does not share the same alignment as the enclosure, suggesting contemporaniety on the basis of such evidence seems distinctly flawed. (3)
See M3612 for Neolithic mortuary enclosure.
