Full Description

During the initial removal of trees and hedges several rows of setts were noted immediately beneath Pickin's Bridge next to the river. Hand cleaning revealed a semi-circular area of rectangular setts defined by thin edging stones and sloping eastwards towards the bridge. The form of the structure suggests that it was a fording point. Although the river Meden runs S of this point at present, C18 maps show at least three channels of the river following various courses and the ford may have crossed one of those. … The construction of the A614 road bridges across the rivers made the ford defunct.
