Full Description
Archaeological deposits and features lie buried throughout most of the development site at a depth between 450 and 950mm. The majority of the Ro pottery appeared to date to later C2-C3 with only very small numbers of C1 or early C2 and rather more late C3-C4 types. There were several sherds of 'Trent Valley Ware' type, which support the suggestion that the site was of a high status during the early period, perhaps with military or official function. … The (later) assemblage included a wide range of traded wares. Sherds of non-Nene Valley colour coated ware, including a possible sagger, raises the possibility of local production. Ro activity has been recorded in every trench indicating extensive occupation or other activity throughout most of the development site as far W as the former river bank. (1)
Occupation throughout the RB period. The cumulative evidence from the excavations as a whole showed significant concentrations of RB features or finds extending from the SW boundary of the site to Trent Lane, and from the river bank to the Northgate frontage. At five locations dry-stone masonry was identified, representing the remains of "strip-buildings" of timber with dry-stone or mortared stone footings of the type commonly found in RB roadside settlments. Two other concentrations of stone in areas 35 and 45 may represent further buildings. There was a general tendency for linear RB features to be aligned perpendicular/parallel to North Gate. The combination of features points strongly towards a settlement of "small town" type, perhaps 6 hectares in area. (2)
