Full Description
The burnt 'mound' was sub-oval in plan. 8m N-S by 12m E-W, maximum height of 0.35m. It comprised layers of black grey sands with frequent inclusions of charcoal and heat shattered angular stone fragments. Pits under the mound and post holes all contained burnt mound material. N was a large rectangular pit 5.5m by 6m (containing) dumped deposits of burnt material comprising 80 - 98% fire cracked stones, and including two late Neo / early BA flint flakes. An IA date is suggested, though this would be very late. Dating material from features associated with the mound was limited to some sherds of Middle Iron Age pottery from ditch 1002, though these could be intrusive. (1)
Examination of plate 7 appears to show the ditch (containing the IA pottery) cutting through the fill of the pit (containing burnt mound material and two flakes of Neo / BA date), contrary to the suggested stratigraphy in the text. It therefore seems reasonable to suppose that the site is a burnt mound of Neo or BA, similar to those known elsewhere in the county. (2)
See M18332 for nearby burnt mound in phase 2, M18371 for nearby IA settlement.
