Full Description

C6 Anglo-Saxon cemetery down-slope of the barrow. Despite almost no bone survival the presence of textile impressions in the metal corrosion products of the grave goods has enabled some interpretation of the cemetery. Of note was an isolated grave close to the barrow where the grave goods and mineralised textile remains indicated that the burial of a high status female. The cemetery extended over an area of at least c 90m x c 50m, extending from the SW ridge of the hill, over the crown, respecting the barrow. Linear patterning may have been present, orientations were N-S, E-W and NE-SW. There was no grouping of one particular orientation. 20 graves were excavated and at least a further 20 were noted. Three graves contained shields and spears, four appear to have had associated grave markers. (1)
See M18372 for associated Bronze Age cemetery and barrow.
See M5206 for cemetery in Rempstone parish, identified from finds, which may in fact have come from here.
