Full Description
An unusually high concentration of early medieval pottery. Distinctive fragment of cruciform brooch of C6 to early C7 date, may hint at cemetery evidence. A ring of copper alloy could possibly be of Saxon date. At least two, and possibly four, Anglo-Saxon sunken-featured buildings were recorded, two in trench 11 (1103 and inferred from the recovery of loom weights in feature 1115), with two others some 115m and 160m away within the watching brief area. Three lay on the flanks of the dune top, the fourth towards the base of the dune. Such structures are often dispersed around the settlement and their distance apart suggests that it was extensive. (1)
On top of the dune, remains of an Anglo Saxon settlement were discovered. Four were apparently simple huts, or Grubenhauser, two of which produced evidence for weaving. A further structure was of the 'hall' type, a residential building consisting of a rectangular arrangement of post holes. The final building was a concentration of burnt daub immediately below the modern ploughsoil. Remanent magnetic dates from its clay floor indicated AD650 - 815 or AD 1600 - 1700. (2)
