Full Description

The common element 'conery' occurs repeatedly in the field names on the terrace hereabouts, being one of several forms derived from Middle English coninger, used in reference to the location of rabbit warrens, so that its occurrence in in the late post medieval landscape here seems certain to represent an earlier arrangement in which a substantial block of land was given over to the farming of rabbits. ... A series of straight slots plus two rows of spaced pits all ran parallel, sufficiently closely related on plan as to imply contemporaneity … maybe had some functional role in the context of the coninger. … Ring I, penannular, with N causeway. Enclosed a group of six features, each with unusual irregularity of form. Small pit 4m to N of ring, situated on the projected long axis of the oval ditch. Possible interpretations might see it connected with the coninger (the ring ditch having perhaps bounded a round pillow mound with sub surface burrows). … A group of features which may be tentatively interpreted as the sub-structure of a pillow mound, comprised a series of straight slots and shorter but elongated pits forming a symmetrical rectilinear setting, measuring approximately 6x7m overall, and essentially involving three parallel members with two short outliers. This arrangement of features is broadly reminiscent of some recorded in excavating below pillow mounds elsewhere. (1)
