Full Description
A number of parallel soilmarks running across the sandy ridge defining a series of small fields / enclosures. Analogies may be provided by examples dated only by their morphology to the IA / Romano-British period and medieval and later strip fields. They do not conform to the 'usual' 'Brickwork plan' pattern. (1) (2)
There are well preserved ditches, including the survival of buried soil beneath upcast, associated with these ditches. (3)
The evidence for occupation in mid C1 at Tiln is remarkable on account of the small numbers of sites at which pre-Roman IA or Conquest period occupation has been ascertained. Later wares present in the fieldwalked and unstratified collections. (4)
A Ro rural settlement with probable late IA (possibly earlier) origins. The domestic component of the farmstead appears to have been revealed in its entirety, displaying multiple phases of activity and and a possible shift in focus from N to S. The complex is bounded by the line of an extinct watercourse to the S and by the River Idle to the W. (5)
