Full Description

Watching brief and excavation during soil stripping exposed a buried land surface (with) irregularly shaped natural hollows. Hollow 112, with a depth of 0.35m and 6.4 x 5.5m (maximum) contained a series of silt deposits associated with a large assemblage of worked flint. A total of c.3500 worked flints were recovered from the silt deposits in the main hollow, from the surface of the natural sand and from the fills of five smaller hollows in the immediate vicinity. … The assemblage exhibits a high degree of chronological homogeniety. More than one phase is present but most of the material is of Mesolithic character. Hollow 112 contains 1 main knapping event and up to 4 smaller events. There may be 2 or 3 smaller satellite assemblages around the periphery of hollow 112. The different phases of activity may have been separated by days or months. Prior to the knapping events in the main hollow there was a background scatter of activity in the immediate vicinity. Microliths were being manufactured within hollow 112. The Newington assemblage constitutes the largest single stratified Mesolithic assemblage from North Nottinghamshire. The scatter hints at the high probability of a major Mesolithic settlement in the near vicinity. (1)
