Full Description
The canal had not been built at the time of an estate map of 1690 and was first shown in a view of 1705. In 1791 Repton proposed to let the river take its own course, this entailing widening of the river and the infilling of the canal. Work was carried out in the mid 1790s. The canal is a feature of some historic interest. Few have been looked at archaeologically. This one appears to have been quite wide, but shallow, with angled edges and a flat base. Although it featured a cascade at this east end, just where it was and how it was constructed have yet to be established. Some finds were recovered from the canal bottom. These included some animal bones and a clay pipe bowl dating to mid - late C18, a time when the canal was still open and functioning. (1)
