Full Description
Regionally, perhaps nationally, important evidence for Neolithic and Early Bronze Age occupation lies buried beneath the suggested pre-Roman ploughsoil. A spread of pits and post holes, the latter suggesting possible structures, was traced over a distance of at least 170m. These very well preserved features contain an extensive assemblage of finds including pottery, fired clay (including part of a possible cylindrical weight), heat affected stones, saddle quern fragments, worked flint, burnt bone and charcoal consistent with a domestic settlement site of the Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. Although the precise character and extent of the activity remains to be clarified, an extended period of occupation seems probable on the basis of the large area covered by the activity, the intercutting of the features and the chronological range of the pottery, inlcuding possible Grimston Ware sherds, Beaker vessels and Peterborough Ware. Assessment of samples has suggested remarkably good preservation of carbonised grain and other material. (1)
