Full Description
The cobbled layers (exposed in pits) indicated a former surface to the market place. The only dating evidence suggested that the cobbled surface was constructed at the end of the medieval period (C14-C16). It is likely the series of demolition and levelling deposits situated between the cobbled surface and the modern paved surface indicate the intermittent removal of worn surfaces and subsequent levelling and resurfacing of the market place. A series of deposits overlying the cobbled surface, consisting of silty sands with charcoal flecks. All of the animal bone came from these deposits, much of it showing evidence of butchery practices. This suggests that the material is derived from midden deposits related to the activity of market traders. The dating evidence suggests a deposition date in C15 / C16, which accords well with the underlying cobbled surface dating C14 - C16. (1)
