Full Description

Exploratory trench lying NE/SW and 15m from the road. A ditch was identified with 3 distinctive layers of clay infill below the ploughsoil. Some packed stones lay against the E bank of the ditch just above the primary infill. The fully excavated ditch was 1.6m deep below the base of the ploughsoil and approx 4m wide. No evidence for a rampart could be found. Small pieces of charcoal were scattered throughout the red/brown clay of the priomary infill but the only find was an Iron Age brooch possibly of the early part of the C1 AD. This lay amoungst some stones just above the primary infill. It is now in Mansfield Museum. (1)
