Cinema designed by Alfred J. Thraves (1), see also The Majestic, Retford (grade II listed), Regent Cinema Kirkby-in-Ashfield (LIE), Odeon Nottingham (no grade), Kings Theatre Sutton-in-Ashfield (unsure of survival). Also The Granada Cinema Mansfield, The Savoy Sutton-in-Ashfield - both demolished (1)
1936 saw the construction of this cinema by Messers Simon of West Bridgford for Mr. R. L. Kemp. Originally seating 1,189 people ‘The Byron superseded all other cinemas of the town in luxury’.
The first film to be shown was on Monday 2 November 1936 entitled “The Littlest Rebel” starring Shirley Temple. The manager being Mr. Pryce-Davis, who had come from the Palace at Mansfield. (2)
