Full Description

Small square enclosure, possibly linked to similar feature to SW. (1)
Morph: 32.8.1 and 32.8.2. (2)
Trench 05. Two isolated, small, sub square enclosures approx. 10 x 10 m, lying c. 3m apart. E enclosure ditch had been recut, 3 sherds of IA pottery from the recut. An shallow oval feature with traces of a post hole at one edge had been cut into the ditch. The size and shape of this feature might suggest it contained a secondary inhumation burial, but there were no finds. W enclosure had a shallow U profile ditch 0.4m deep and 1.6m wide with no evidence for re-cutting . Between the enclosures was a circular pit, 2m diameter with a centrally placed recut. Three sherds of hand made pottery, probably IA, from the fill. A second external feature was a sub circular bowl like pit, c.0.7m diameter. (3)
Typologically distinct square ditched enclosures, up to around 10m in diameter internally, which it has been suggested may be related to the square barrows of the Arras tradition of eastern Yorkshire. Small clusters reported in Nottinghamshire, most notably at … Gonalston [quarry, in Hoveringham parish]. Now preserved in situ. (4)
