Full Description
The large stone in the churchyard wall, which shows the height reached by the flood of 1795, is the pediment of the old churchyard cross. The shaft has disappeared, but the socket in which it was placed is easily recognisable. (1)
The socket is set on edge beside the S gate to the churchyard, at SK 82942 62010. (2)
A large stone block 0.75m x 0.8m set into the wall with chamfered stops at each corner. There is an almost square socket in the centre 0.38m x 0.35m and 0.12m deep. The underside visible on the outside face of the churchyard wall is inscribed 'FLOOD IN 1795' with a horizontal line marking the flood level. The cross must have gone before this date. (3)
See M4342 for church, M10631 for churchyard wall.
