Full Description

Linear features and anomalies of probable and possible archaeological origin were found. (1)
Some of the features identified during geophysical survey are likely to be land drains found over the site during the topsoil stripping. Linear features were observed running roughly north-south. There were four distinct linears at the west spaced 8-10m apart, and 14 linears more closely spaced, generally 2-3m apart. These linear features varied in width beteen about 1.8m and 3.8m wide. Several were excavated to determine their character. One was a plough furrow containing a single sherd of medieval pottery. Another produced one sherd of post-medieval pottery and a clay pipe stem. The westernmost feature was different in composition and form to the eastern furrows. It produced 32 post medieval finds (clay pipe, blue bottle glass, button, CBM and 20 pottery sherds). The features are evidence of plough furrows, possible field boundaries or drainage systems and indicate this area was used for arable and/or pastoral agriculture in the medieval and post-medieval periods.
