Full Description

Seven of the 97 fields walked yielded no flints at all. In total, 1981 flint objects were recovered. Most are honey-to-black colour, some are of a grey-speckled Wolds type. One object is of black chert.

Of the finds, 1 is confidently assigned to the Lower Palaeolithic and three are possibly Palaeolithic. Two finds are considered Late Upper Palaeolithic. Two are certain to be Mesolithic (microlith and a blade fragment). A further seven could be Mesolithic. One group of three in south Starnhill may indicate the proximity of a camp site. A large number of finds contain no diagnostic Mesolithic or Earlier Neolithic traits and could be attributed to either. The largest concentration of undated finds extends in a broad band from the Margidunum roundabout along the parish boundary to the railway line with particularly high densities on Parson's Hill and the fields to the north west of it. Within this band there are four dated Early Bronze Age tools on Parson's Hill and four Neolithic finds on or close to Parson's Hill. Field 1695 has a sufficiently high density to suggest the possibility of a habitation site but the finds range through the Neolithic, contain undated material and cannot be tied down to a narrower range. In field 9703 a tight cluster of Late Mesolithic to Earlier Neolithic flints was found on the western end of the lake deposit. Strong possibility that this marks the proximity of a Mesolithic hunter-gatherer site with activity concentrated around the lake margin. The scatter at the filling station seems to have been the nucleus for a settled area that developed in the Earlier Neolithic period. The greatest concentrations of Earlier Neolithic finds are in fields around Lower Brackendale Farm and south of Whitefields Farm. Fields 0179, 2383, 9278, 9375 and 9676 produced assemblages that as a whole could be dated to the Early Neolithic.

A small group in Granby Lane is associated only with Later Neolithic to Bronze Age material. In field 9278, 90 pieces of worked flint reflect a technology with preparation of cores and curation of striking platforms to produce mainly blades. In field 9676, 122 pieces of worked flint were recovered mostly exhibiting characteristics dating to the Earlier Neolithic or earlier. Two nucleated points could indicate two settlements, but need not have been concurrent. Field 2388, NE Starnhill Farm, has a finds density and distribution that might imply Later Neolithic settlement. Among the 132 pieces found in this field was a polished stone axe and flakes from polished flint axes. Fields 9274, 8982 and 2383 produced large assemblages containing elements of both the Earlier and Later Neolithic. 259 pieces in total from these three fields including end scrapers, blades, cores, two arrowheads and flakes. Indication of settlement in field 2383 south of Starnhill Farm. Early Bronze Age Tool recovered from field 2491 and 29 pieces of worked flint of LN/EBA date recovered from field 1690. LN/EBA finds also recovered from field 1786 to the south of 1690. These fields are peripherial to the Late Neolithic centres and might represent outward expansion from any or all of these settled areas. There might well have been a Bronze Age habitation site at SE Spring Farm. Field 0881 (South Spring Farm) contained a fragment of polished discoidal knife, and other tools dating to LN or BA. It may have been a habitation site. A block of three fields, 0185, 9985 and 9987, contained dated EBA tools among worked flints attributable to the LN-BA. (1)
