Full Description

Former site of ROF (Royal Ordnance Factory) Ranskill, a factory created by the Ministry of Works in 1939 to produce explosive charges and propellants for WW2. At its peak, the factory produced 300 tons of cordite a week. The land acquired [for the factory] was 517 acres south of and 366 acres north of Lound-Torworth Road, the actual factory area being only 385 acres. The workforce (4, 032 by Dec 1942) was housed in purpose built housing on land acquired nearby. (1)
