Full Description
GPR Survey. The clearest wall lines are those of a rectangular building immediately north of, but on a different alignment to, the standing remains. This may represent a chapel.
Trench 6 was positioned on the south-east side where a possible entrance could be seen. The geophysical response corresponded to a sw-ne aligned foundation trench. No masonry encountered. Pottery from backfill suggests a 13th to 15th century date. Medieval window glass found in topsoil and backfill of the foundation trench. At the eastern end of trench 6, the foundation trench cut through demolition deposits suggesting other structures which pre-dated this building. In the south-west corner of the trench, the masonry structure of an entrance or porch was seen, but most of the structure was truncated by a robber cut.
Trench 7 was positioned over the south-eastern corner of the building. Foundation trench seen. A sondage through the south-western arm revealed a deposit of angular stone slabs and river cobbles, possibly an attempt to strengthen this particular section of wall. The foundation cut through a buried soil, also seen in the western part of trench 6, which contained pottery from the late 13th-15th century. A stony compact deposit within the trench may well be a floor remnant. This was left in situ. (1)
