Full Description

No's 1-6 Newstead Road and The Grove were built at the same time, by the Annesley Colliery company and were known to be fully completed before the 1871 Census. An example of some of the first purpose built cottages for mineworkers in Nottinghamshire. A peculiar feature is that they are numbered 1-6 and stood opposite the pit on Newstead Road, half a mile away at the end of Annesley Cutting we have 'The Grove' miners cottages numbered 7-24. (1)
Nominated Site for Local Listing by Ashfield District Council (ADC Ref: 916) (1).
On Newstead Road are three pairs of semi-detached houses which were built for clerks and other [Colliery] officials. (2)
