Full Description
Barn to the south of Grade II Listed Yew Tree Farmhouse (see MNT17642).
A traditionally-built former agricultural building associated with Yew Tree Farm. Linear in plan, … gable on to Main Street. Brick-built. Flemish bond, excepts for the lower courses of the south-west facing elevation which are laid in a English Garden Wall Bond, suggesting re-building work has taken place, possibly retaining these lower courses from the earlier building. Pitched pantile roof. Five principal bays and two clear building phases, it is possible that the north-westernmost end of the building is also a separate phase. There is decorative saw tooth corbelling on the gables and long elevations. Window and door openings are largely under sol-dier brick flat cambered arches. There are four rectangular windows towards the eastern end of the north facing elevation, these may be later modifications or insertions. The westernmost bay is open to the roof with cart doors on each elevation appears to originally have been a fodder store. The easternmost bays are two storey and laid out with concrete cattle stalls along the south-west wall. The floors are laid in blue brick. The ceiling over the easternmost bays is car-ried on deal bridging beams. The roof, where visible is carried on King Post trusses with raking struts, again in deal. King Post trusses have a wide date range, however in this example the King Post is bolted at the heel, which securely dates the truss to post 1820 – 1830. This appears to support the potential re-building work observed elsewhere. A mid to late 19th century mixed agricultural building built on and retaining some structural elements of an earlier building, rec-orded on early 19th century mapping. The building housed cattle in the easternmost bays and fodder in the westernmost bay. The building was later extended to the east, possibly to house a feed preparation room. It reflects the modernisation and changes seen in later 19th century agri-cultural practice. (1)
The building is a traditionally built former agricultural building, believed to date from the 19th century. (2)
