Full Description
The outbuildings associated with Manor Farm are typical examples of the range of buildings normally associated with a 19th century Nottinghamshire farm. The buildings consist of a courtyard design with a large threshing barn to the north and two ranges of mixed used building forming the east and west wings of the yard and an isolated cart shed to the south. Cartographic evidence suggests the farm underwent significant modernisation during the mid 19th century when it appears the buildings were constructed. The buildings underwent further modernisation during the late 19th and early 20th centuries with the insertion of line shafts to provide driven power and concrete floors and troughs to reach then current hygiene standards. There are a number of ambiguities regarding the evolution of Manor Farm. There is a comparative lack of 20th century buildings, suggesting the farm ceased being a true working farm earlier in the century than many. The extensive stabling along with the size of Manor Farmhouse suggests the farm may not have been a true working farm from an earlier date, but the extensive early 20th century modernisation conflicts with this; it is possible that Manor Farm only operated as a small dairy farm during the 20th century, potentially supplying milk
by train to Nottingham using the adjacent Nottingham and Lincoln railway. (1)
The archaeological watching brief [on the excavation of drainage trench around the southernmost barn] did not record any finds or deposits of archaeological significance. The watching brief indicated that the farmyard has been built up using imported fly ash from the adjacent power station. (1)
