Full Description

Former kitchen garden associated with Listed Welbeck Abbey within the Registered Park.
The westernmost former walled garden …was also developed in the mid-19th century as part of a large (10 ha) complex of Estate kitchen gardens. The former garden is also depicted on the
1886 map, with pathways circulating around its edge leading to and from openings within the interlinking walled gardens. The map shows no indication of any other structures or layout at this time. However, by the production of the 1898 OS map the garden is shown as an orchard with additional central east-west pathway and small structure to the west of the centre. This structure was removed by 1919, although the garden remains shown as an orchard on the OS mapping. (1)

The former walled garden gradually rises in ground level to the south, the highest point
being along the southern edge. Currently the walled garden functions as a car park serving
the Estate shops and gallery, with hardstanding and hardcore covering much of the area.
An area of grass remains to the western side, although this is currently not utilised. Although the walls of the garden remain, nothing further of its original form continues and the space is not experienced at present as a garden area. (1)

The former walled garden’s significance is vested in its physical fabric, forming a component
of the mid- 19th century kitchen gardens serving the Estate, demonstrating its
archaeological, architectural and historic interests. The former garden is not listed, but does
form a valuable part of the Estate’s later development, and contributes to the significance
of the Grade II Registered Park and Garden. As such it is considered a non-designated
heritage asset. (1)
