Full Description

The building dates to 1903 and was originally the home to Ernest Newell, local industrialist and philanthropist. Newell established ‘Ernest Newell & Co Ltd’ in 1892, on a site approximately 650m to the east, who quickly became a notable iron founder and engineering firm. The Newell's firm was a major local employer until its closure in the 1990s. Newell constructed around 40 dwellings for his workers across Misterton, mostly identifiable by their distinctive dark red brick and decorative elements. This is one of a number of Newell’s constructions identified as a non-designated heritage asset, described as “1903 villa (originally called 'The Thorns'), built for Ernest Newell, local industrialist, two storeys, red brick with rosemary tile roof, original timber joinery throughout including '1 over 1' sashes and front entrance door with glazed surround, decorative ridge tiles, brick stacks; attached billiard room to east.” (Article 4 Doc 25.05.2021, by M Tagg -BDC)

Immediately north of the house is a large outbuilding, originally the coach house/garaging and stables to the property. This building is also regarded as a non-designated heritage asset due to its historic and architectural interest, its aesthetic appeal and its association with Newell. The non-designated heritage asset database gives the following details: “1903 coach house/garage with stabling and store, associated with The Thorns/No.61 (adjacent), built for Ernest Newell, two storeys, red brick with rosemary tile roof, brick arches, timber joinery, steel lintel”. (Article 4 Doc 25.05.2021, by M Tagg -BDC)

The house sits atop a shallow rise in ground level, making the property very prominent in all directions, but particularly when viewed from the east. This location would have meant the building would have stood out when travelling from the factory, this relationship being a key part of its understanding. (Article 4 Doc 25.05.2021, by M Tagg -BDC)

The property’s exterior remains largely unaltered since 1903, and retains the majority of its historic architectural features. (Article 4 Doc 25.05.2021, by M Tagg -BDC)

Building was subject of an Article 4 Direction by Bassetlaw District Council as of 25/05/2021.
