Full Description

Village school opened in 1885. The lands and funds for the building were gifted to the village by Catherine Sherwin Gregory of Bramcote Hills House. The Sherwin Gregory cote of arms are present above the front porch. The building occupies a prominant sloping site on Town St.

Brick built with stone dressed window and door surrounds and stone string course at plinth. Windows arranged with 4 tripart mullioned windows containing 8 panes and 3 tripart mullioned windows of 12 panes. Gables contain single slit breathers and decorative dogtooth mouldings which continue thorugh the eaves.

The above arrangement is broken by an asymetrically placed projecting gabled porch containing a stone relief of the Sherwin Gregory Arms above an stone arched stepped entrance flanked by stone dressed brick butresses. There all two part mullioned windows to each side of the porch and a arched plank double door painted red.

The gable roof is of plaintiles with decorative fishscale bands running through, simpole ridge tiles with ball finials at each end. Above the porch sits a ogee cupola topped with a finial, a bell is visible within the open sides.

At the northern end of the building the roof line drops with the contour and this end is hipped. A large chimney stack emerges from the end wall built of brick with stone dressings and tumbled brick detail, the upper section is rebuilt in a darker brick. This section contains a double two part mullioned window of 8 panes, under a low pitched dormer, other details match the above.

The school is enclosed by railings above a very low stepped plinth of brick and stone. End fence posts have urn detal. (1)
