Listing Appeal Review in 1471947 11/11/2020
The review request provided further information to support the suggestion that the buildings at Holly Farm were designed by the architect William Wilkins. This additional information is in the form of records from the account books of the Holme Pierrepoint estate, on which the farm stands, and these show payments to Wilkins from the years 1799 and 1814. Additional records show that buildings at Holly Farm were built during these years for the then tenant, Robert Parr, and it is known that Wilkins was involved in the preparation of designs of buildings across the estate during his time working for the Manvers. Although none of this evidence definitively proves the hand of Wilkins in the design of the buildings at Holly Farm, such definite attribution of buildings such as these is often difficult, and the evidence presented does present a strong case to suggest that Wilkins may have been involved at Holly Farm. As the review request concluded, it is possible/probable that he was. (2)

Cow Shed with a Belfast Truss Roof:
Both the cow shed and the crew yard at Holly Farm were noted as examples of Belfast Roof Trusses in Nottinghamshire. Even in the mid to late 1980s they were known to be so rare that they were noted on the ‘risk’ information collated by the fire stations that covered Bassingfield and surrounding area. The Belfast truss roof on the crew yard was built in 1923 and dismantled in the 1980’s. (2)

The Threshing Barn:
Designed by William Wilkins, built with bricks made by Richard Hooton in a brickyard owned by the Manvers estate in Sneinton Fields with a Flemish Bond (the same as Bromley House in Nottingham) in 1799 at a costs of £100 15s 71/2d for Robert Parr at Bassingfield. The threshing barn is shown as a ‘T’ shaped building which is quite distinct from the other square or rectangular shapes. This barn is still ‘T’ shaped, and this serves to demonstrate that the current building shape has not changed since it was built in 1799.
