Full Description
Built in 1871. Probably a national school given its proximity to the parish church. A very small building consisting of a schoolroom and classroom, now surrounded by CLASP additions. Blue brick banding added decorative effect. The windows are iron casements set in brick lancet arches, grouped I threes below pointed relieving arches. A very nice roof structure survives in the classroom, with corbels set on trefoil and quatrefoil pierced wall plate. A similar structure could easily survive behind the inserted ceiling of the schoolroom. In setting of the Grade I listed medieval church. . (NCC School Survey 2004)(1)
Clarborough Mixed School, as it was then called, came into existence following the 1870 Education (‘Forster’s’) Act. The opening entry in the first school Log Book (1871-1887) is dated 1st May, 1871:
This day I (Ellen Robinson) took the charge of the above named school. It has not been placed under government but is to be, though it has been subject to the Inspector’s visits. (www.clarborough-welham.org.uk)
