Full Description

Dated 1863. Bears the arms of Earl Manvers. There is quite a high level of decoration, with blue brick diapering, a stone plinth band and carved bargeboards. A side porch has been recently removed and the main double-height schoolroom has been subdivided. The windows are heavy wooden casements, some with central Doric columns; the principal windows are set beneath pointed, polychrome relieving arches. The east gable wing forms the master’s house; an earlier barn range further east has been refaced in a similar style to the school. A largely original dwarf wall carries renewed gates and railings. The roofscape has several ornate chimneys. Original doors survive throughout, the exterior one having ornate hinges. Internally one Gothic fireplace survives. In the immediate setting of the Grade I listed church. (NCC School Survey 2004)(1)

Brick-built Primary school built on a irregular H-plan. Elevation to Plumtree Road has spinal range with large central chimney breast with decorative brick and stone dressings and stone plaque with date (1863). The windows have a moulded central pillar and surrounds with stone cills. The gabled ranges at either end have diaper brickwork in a diamond pattern as well as decorative carved bargeboards. The multi-pane windows have pointed arched headers in a decorative pattern of red and vitrified (black) bricks. The east range has a two large decorative chimney stack. (2)

Single-storey detached outbuilding which appears to be a former stable (entrances and windows now infilled) sits to the east of the school building with its gable end to the road. The gable has matching diaper brick work and also has decorative eaves which sit under a slate roof. The 1883 (3), 1899 (4), 1915 (5) and 1950 (6) OS maps all show the east range and the outbuilding within one curtilage and the main school building separate. (2)
